The welcoming, historic club offers RYA-sailing and powerboating courses, summer camps, family-friendly sessions and a Member Buddy system, making it friendly for newcomers. Even expert sailors can enjoy year-round race training, perfect for those preparing for an event.

The club’s Saturday Sailing and Sunday Family Sailing sessions offer relaxed ways to get on the water, while groups like Dangerous Girls empower women of all ages to build their confidence on the water.

The club also partners with Salterns Sailing Club, where children from 4 to 16 years old can receive sailing instruction in a supportive, fun environment.

Whether you’re looking to race, cruise, or simply enjoy time together, Lymington Town Sailing Club is a fantastic place to explore the joys of sailing.

Salterns Sailing Club

Located on tranquil Eight Acre Pond, this youth-centric club has been nurturing young sailors aged 4 to 16 since 1960.

Established by Major Tony Hibbert MBE MC, the club’s mission is to teach children how to sail in a fun, safe, and challenging environment. Many of its alumni even go on to race nationally and internationally. The club’s idyllic location, surrounded by a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), creates the perfect environment for young sailors to hone their skills and develop a lifelong love for the sea, with an active racing programme which ensures that aspiring sailors have every opportunity to develop their skills.

One of the world’s largest yacht races, the Round The Island Race covers more than 50 nautical miles. Circumnavigating around the Isle of Wight, passing iconic landmarks, such as The Needles and St Catherine’s Point, there are over 550 boats set to race this year. Offering stunning views of The Needles and St. Catherine’s Point, it’s a thrilling day for sailors and spectators alike. For those wishing to watch the historic race from afar, there is even a TV channel, which launched in 2015, showcasing the event.

Co-hosted by RLymYC and LTSC, the Lymington Dinghy Regatta is a highlight of the summer sailing season. The weekend event attracts sailors from across the South Coast and beyond, where each fleet can partake in two or three races each day. With so much to see and do in just one day, our informative guide will help you plan the perfect itinerary so that every moment of your island escape is filled with memories to cherish forever..

The Needles & Alum Bay

A Coastal Wonderland

No visit to the Isle of Wight is complete without experiencing The Needles, one of the island’s most iconic landmarks. Towering chalk stacks rise dramatically from the sea, creating a breathtaking backdrop to the colourful sands of Alum Bay.

Sun worshippers can relax on the shores while families can enjoy building sandcastles and dipping their toes in the rock pools. The famous chairlift ride offers a spectacular bird’s-eye view over the cliffs, or for a closer look, hop on a boat trip around the infamous landmark.

For those feeling nostalgic, the Alum Bay amusements bring all the fun of a traditional seaside escape, with a Victorian carousel and a charming arcade for all to enjoy. Thrill-seekers can get competitive at the Jurassic Golf course or take the Dino Jeep Safari, while souvenir hunters can visit Alum Bay Glass to watch expert glassblowers craft treasured souvenirs to take home.

Colwell Bay

A Watersports Haven

Located on the western side of the island, Colwell Bay is a stunning beach that seamlessly blends relaxation and adventure. The gentle waves make it a safe and welcoming spot for families with little ones, while the mix of sand and shingle creates a peaceful seaside escape. Visitors can browse traditional beach shops, selling everything from buckets and spades to rubber rings, or indulge in seaside delights, such as fish and chips or an ice cream cone. You can even rent a deck chair for a lazy afternoon in the sun.

For those seeking something more exhilarating day out, watersports are a highlight here. Whether you want to try paddleboarding, bodyboarding, or even surfing, there’s something for everyone, with equipment all available to hire. With 60 miles of coastline to explore, many beaches on the island have even been rated ‘Excellent’ by the Environmental Agency for their water quality. The island is also home to the world-famous Cowes Week Regatta, making it a fantastic place to learn to sail!

The Hut (Colwell Bay)

Delicious Seafood & Sunsets

The Hut deserves its own place on our list due to its stellar reputation among locals and visitors alike. With its lively atmosphere, fresh seafood caught that day and sensational views of the bay, it’s no surprise the rustic beach bar stands above the competition.

The venue’s fresh, seasonal menu is bursting with just caught lobster, crab, prawns, mussels and oysters, all paired with delicious seaside inspired cocktails and colourful side dishes. As the sun dips below the horizon, live DJs set the perfect tone for an evening of celebrating.

Bookings are advised, particularly during the summer months. You can even get your boat to bring you straight to the venue in style!

Cycling and Scenic Walks

Discover Hidden Gems and Unique Spots

One of the best ways to experience the island is by cycle. With more than 200 miles of cycling trails, the region is a cyclist’s paradise. Bikes are available for hire, so even if you don’t bring your own, you can enjoy the open roads and fresh sea air.

For a gentle ride, the Freshwater Bay cycle route is ideal. The scenic 6.5-mile trail follows an old railway track alongside the River Yar, offering plenty of stop-off points to relax or grab a bite to eat. Note that there is a small section of on-road cycling, but you will be rewarded with stunning views of the bay, with the opportunity to take a refreshing dip in the crystal-clear waters.

Carisbrooke Castle

Historical Landmark & Interactive Experiences for all ages

Open from Wednesday to Sunday, Carisbrooke Castle is the perfect place to visit for history lovers, with over 1,000 years of history to uncover.

Once the prison of King Charles I, the historic landmark invites visitors to explore its mighty stone walls, climb the ancient keep, and even meet the famous Carisbrooke donkeys, who still turn the centuries-old treadwheel. For those looking to unwind, why not feel at peace in St Nicholas’ Chapel or grab a slice of afternoon tea in The Castle Tearoom?

Families will love the hands-on exhibits, medieval reenactments, and the stunning Princess Beatrice Garden, designed in honour of Queen Victoria’s daughter. If you have time, take a visit to Osborne House, Queen Victoria’s beloved seaside retreat, just a short drive or bus ride away (on Line 5).

Tapnell Farm Park

Family-Friendly Adventure

For those looking for a day out that truly has something for everyone, Tapnell Farm Park is the ultimate destination.

Venture to the Isle of Wight’s only football golf course, test your aim with archery and axe throwing or try clay pigeon shooting. If you’re looking to make a splash, the Aqua Park—packed with over 20 thrilling obstacles and slides- is reopening in Spring 2025.

Younger visitors can meet friendly farm animals or burn off energy in the soft play areas, trampolines, and adventure barns, all designed to keep kids entertained for hours. For those seeking a laid-back experience, Tapnell is home to the UK’s first floating sauna and wild spa. A Nordic-inspired wellness retreat, unwind in the wood-fired sauna, take a dip in the ice-cold plunge tank, or relax in the hygge-style lounging area with a fire pit.

Peckish? Make sure you take a pit stop at The Cow Restaurant. Serving home-grown food, the venue is known for its award-winning burgers, providing the perfect way to refuel.
